WHO ORS Context — Not a BIOS Formula Target
WHO and UNICEF recommend a reduced-osmolarity Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) formulation for a clinical dehydration use case. That clinical context is informative for hydration science, but BIOS is not an ORS and does not claim clinical equivalence.

Key Finding
The reduced-osmolarity WHO ORS specification includes 75 mmol/L of glucose and 75 mmol/L of sodium when prepared as directed for its clinical purpose.
Application to BIOS
BIOS considers sodium-glucose cotransport physiology during formulation. That rationale does not establish a target clinical formula, hydration speed, or product-specific outcome.
Osmolarity Rule
WHO ORS has a stated reduced osmolarity for its clinical formulation. BIOS will communicate final serving instructions and formula specifications only after pre-launch validation.
Sports Nutrition References (Hypotonic Drinks & Water Volume)
Research examines how beverage concentration, volume, and carbohydrate type can affect gastric emptying and intestinal fluid handling. Those studies provide general context; they do not establish that BIOS produces a faster or superior hydration outcome than another product.

Finding: The study evaluated the relationship among carbohydrate type, concentration, solution osmolality, and water absorption in its study setting. Its results should not be generalized into a product-specific performance claim.

Finding: Fluid replacement during exercise is affected by multiple variables, including beverage composition and use context. BIOS will not claim a particular gastric-emptying or hydration result without finished-product evidence.
SGLT1 Transporter Mechanics (2:1 Cellular Ratio & Saturation)
To understand why the SGLT1 transporter chemically requires 2 sodium ions for 1 glucose molecule (strict stoichiometry), and why it can easily "find" the glucose even if you dilute it in 20 oz of water, we look at cellular physiology.

Finding: Dr. Ernest Wright is the foremost authority on SGLT proteins. His research mapped the exact stoichiometry of the SGLT1 transporter, confirming it is strictly a 2:1 Sodium-to-Glucose cotransporter at the cellular membrane.
Why a 1:1 drink works: Wright and gastroenterologists note that the human gut has a large pool of endogenous (internal) sodium secreted by digestive juices. Therefore, you only need to ingest a 1:1 ratio; your body provides the rest to meet the 2:1 cellular requirement.

Finding: The Michaelis constant (Km) for SGLT1 is roughly 0.5 to 2 millimolar (mM). When you mix 2 grams of glucose into 20 oz of water, your solution is roughly 18.7 mM — vastly higher than the 2 mM threshold, scientifically proving that 20 oz of water is not "too diluted" to trigger the hydration pumps.
